The Signal

Mistral's open 1T model lists at roughly a tenth of GPT-6 Astra's price.

AI Breakfast has Large 4 at $1.36 in and $4.18 out per million tokens, against $10 and $50, with weights shipping Oct. 27 while OpenAI and Anthropic prepare their IPOs. That gives procurement a published number to quote back in any closed-model renewal you negotiate this quarter. Texas has frozen large grid hookups. Power and permits are now the scarce inputs, and neither appears on any vendor's price sheet.

In Play

  1. Western Open Weights Reset Model Pricing

Mistral releases open weights for Large 4 on Oct. 27. It lists at $1.36/$4.18 per million tokens, against GPT-6 Astra's $10/$50, per AI Breakfast. Nvidia-backed Reflection AI is launching Beam for coding and agent work this month, Morning Brew reports. That gives your closed-model renewals a credible, security-acceptable alternative just as OpenAI and Anthropic prepare IPOs. All of Mistral's benchmarks are self-reported.

  2. Grid Permission Becomes the Compute Bottleneck

ERCOT has paused switch-on approvals for every data center of 75 MW or more, a16z reports. That includes 17 projects that had cleared every other step, and the pause follows the large-load queue reaching 474 GW. Separately, Finland ordered Google to halt a €13B data center, per MIT Technology Review. If your providers' 2027–2028 capacity sits in Texas, assume those dates slip at least until a December audit.

  3. Offensive Cyber Goes Open and Machine-Speed

Former NSA chief Paul Nakasone says AI has cut adversary dwell time, the time attackers spend inside a network, to about 29 minutes, CyberScoop reports. The same outlet reports that the PoeLLM botnet has hijacked more than 3,400 self-hosted open-source AI servers since April. Mistral reports 93% on the Cybench hacking benchmark for a model anyone can download this month. That leaves two exposures: response processes that wait for a human to approve, and AI servers that sit outside security review.

  4. SaaS Rally Meets the Inference Bill

Strong Salesforce and ServiceNow results pushed US software stocks to 2026 highs, TLDR IT reports. HubSpot, meanwhile, is down more than 40% year to date and cutting 7% of staff, per The Information. The market is rewarding revenue durability and has not yet priced AI's cost side. Tom Tunguz projects inference spending of $350B by 2027, and that spending lands in software cost of goods. The two reports disagree on whether incumbents are safe, but both say the moat is moving from feature breadth to proprietary context and workflow.

  5. Exit Window Stays Shut, Shadow Markets Fill It

Oura postponed its IPO on Sept. 29, after its roadshow, Fortune's Term Sheet reports. The offering valued the company at up to $15.6B, and only 27% of the shares were primary. Benzinga counted seven sizable US IPOs postponed or withdrawn in Q3 2026, up from four in Q2 and three in Q1, per Augment. Ondo now sells offshore notes that track an unnamed pre-IPO AI company's value without holding its shares or getting its consent. Companies stuck waiting to list can end up with a public price they don't control.

Deep Dives

  1. Mistral's Price Card Is Your Renewal Leverage, Not Your Migration Plan

For most buyers the sticker gap overstates the savings. Its real value is a credible exit you can use to reprice closed contracts before IPO-bound labs push multiyear lock-ins.

The arithmetic, and what it leaves out AI Breakfast priced a mid-sized workload of 10 billion input and 3 billion output tokens a month at list rates. On GPT-6 Astra it costs about $250,000 a month . On Mistral Large…

  2. Texas Just Made Flexibility the Price of a Grid Connection

When inference can afford almost any power price, delay is the costliest outcome. That makes compute you can switch off on demand the capability that gets you to the front of the grid queue.

Price was never the constraint One analyst estimate cited by a16z says AI inference could pay $5,600 per megawatt-hour , nearly 60 times the average industrial rate, and still earn a decent return. The reason is that idle GPUs cost…
