Nvidia's $12.9B Hugging Face deal puts the off-ramp from its chips inside its walls.
Eighteen million developers pull open models from that hub and tune them to specific accelerators. Tuning is the migration path to rival silicon, and it now sits on the acquirer's property. A skeptic would note that open weights and permissive licenses limit what any owner can restrict. Fair. Restriction was never the mechanism. Defaults, documentation, and tooling are, which is what any multi-vendor accelerator plan you are budgeting this year has to account for.

Nvidia Now Owns Where Models Meet Silicon
Jensen Huang confirmed Nvidia's $12.9B purchase of Hugging Face on September 3, per The Information. Hugging Face is the archive where roughly 18 million developers get open-source models and tune them for specific accelerators, so the switching path off Nvidia silicon now runs through Nvidia. Huang promised the platform stays open to the whole ecosystem. Techpresso's read is blunter: Nvidia does not need to block anyone, only to make things run fastest on its own hardware.
